Your goals for considering personal training may vary and change, but chances are they look something like: improving your athletic performance, contributing to your overall health, learning the skills to lead your family by example, or maybe, just liking what you see in the mirror.

As fitness professionals, it’s important for us to share the real and ever-present health needs beyond those individual goals. Needs that are widespread, everchanging, and have created systematic health problems in our society as a whole.

The technological advances of the last two decades have quite literally transformed the way we live and work in many positive ways. However, these advances have also created widespread negative effects on our overall wellness. Normal, movement-based activities of daily living, have been greatly reduced or eliminated altogether. We don’t walk, we drive; we don’t hunt, we shop; we don’t move, we sit – you get the idea. Did you know that more than 90% of the U.S. population works in sedentary office environments? And those workers are working longer hours than ever before. This movement vacuum is wreaking havoc on our bodies. The solution? Get Up And Move!

In a 2014 study, Dr. James Levine, director of the Mayo-Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiave and inventor of the treadmill desk, published the findings of a study looking at the adverse effects of our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. He wrote, “Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people that HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.” Read that again and let it absorb. Think about your lifestyle. Think about your children’s lifestyles. Let’s do something about it.
